Outdoor kitchens are becoming more popular, and so is the desire to have the best pizza oven for your outdoor kitchen. When I was offered the chance to test the Ooni Fyra wood-pellet pizza oven, I took it as a great opportunity to find out if owning a pizza oven in our garden would be as fun.
Ooni Fyra is available for purchase on their website. This site can also be used to find out if the item has sold out. Ooni accessories, bundles, and pizza ovens are all available at the Lakeland Ooni section (opens in new window). Check out our widget below to find the best deals for today.
The Fyra delivers its promise of portability. The oven cavity can accommodate the chimneys and the legs are easily folded up. The exterior powder-coated is durable and scratch resistant, weighing in at 20 pounds.
It's all about how they feel. The learning curve is steep. My theory is that a lot of it comes down to the small firebox mentioned in the previous section.
A gas-powered option, such as the Koda 12, is recommended if you have large families or plan on making pizza the centerpiece of your next meal party. Although it will cost you $50 more than pellets and may not be as portable, you will enjoy your meal and the company you have.
Ooni Fyra 12 makes it easy to cook pizza. You simply need to roll your dough on a floured pizza sheet and then, after about 15 minutes, slide the pizza onto the oven. You should cook your pizza at full temperature (Ooni suggests 950 degrees F, which you can test with an infrared thermometer). After that, rotate the pizza about 30 seconds until both sides are near the fire. The pizza will be puffy, evenly charred and ready to eat in about one to two minutes.
These characteristics combined make the Fyra 12 a popular choice for several types of cooks.
The chimney vent can be adjusted to increase the heat within the Ooni Fyra. You can open the vent by removing the chimney cap. This will naturally increase the airflow within the oven, and thus raise the internal temperature.
You can buy the Ooni Fyra (opens in new tab) on the Ooni website and this is a great place to check if it goes out of stock. Otherwise, check the Ooni section on the Lakeland website (opens in new tab) as they sell a number of Ooni pizza ovens, accessories and bundles. The Ooni Fyra 12 is a relatively small pizza oven that, under the right conditions, can cook 12" pizzas and the fuel hopper, which is where you add wood pellets to keep the fire burning. To operate the oven you need a thin pizza peel, all-natural fire starter, and wood pellets, all available through Ooni but not included with the purchase of a Fyra 12. (They do offer all of the above, plus an infrared thermometer and waterproof carry cover, in one bundle.) As of publication it is the least expensive Ooni oven, at $349, and it comes with a three-year warranty.
The chimney is detachable and helps circulate air inside the oven. There’s also a second chimney at the backside, which is the pellet hopper. It’s taller, almost double the size of that of Ooni 3’s hopper.
Ooni Fyra 12 allows you to also cook other items provided you have suitable cookware. Ooni's website has many recipes, including duck breasts and banana cake. Ooni recommends that you use the Ooni Fyra 12, which can be used in any wood-fired oven. Cook the food the same as in an oven: rotate the pan to make sure every angle faces the heat source. Although a small skillet made of cast iron will work, the skillet's handle will stick out of the oven. Ooni offers a cast iron skillet that has a removable handles. This seems a bit fussy. I also think the pan is a bit small and fragile.
I only have two complaints about the overall design: The peephole in the door, there to let you check on a cooking pie without letting out heat, is too tiny to actually see through. And the fire box in the back is also too small, so it's difficult to maintain a consistent flame.
Fyra 12 has some limitations, but it is great. Ooni-branded fire starters and pellets are essential. But your pizza will thank them. You should also be vigilant about not letting the hopper get full if you are making multiple pizzas at once. It's worth it if you are willing to do so. It is as simple as a wood fired pizza maker can get. The compact design folds down to store it when not being used. I am eager to use the Fyra 12 again. In fact, I have already planned a party for my parents next month. This is a testament of how well it works. They would be great for pizza in New York City. The good news is that I can now make it at home.
The Ooni Fyra 12 makes great pizza. Regardless of the dough you use (I’ve tried a few homemade recipes as well as store bought), the results are puffed, spotted, and cooked in record time. It’s a delight to use for a fun dinner for two and amazing as a centerpiece of a party, once you get a handle on your personal system and best practices. The compact nature of the oven also means that whenever it’s not getting the party started, it can easily be stowed away in its box, which is relatively narrow and stackable. As a hater of one-trick kitchen gadgets and large appliances generally, I was surprised how much I loved the Ooni, and how readily I made space for it in my home—the payoff is just that fun.
The assembly of the Ooni Fyra Pizza Oven was easy. This assembly was easy for me as I have zero patience with following instructions (my Ikea flatpack meltdowns were quite legendary in my house).
Windy conditions will prolong the heating process and expose pellets’ greatest flaw: poor flame maintenance. The Fyra 12 may reach the ideal temperature for making pizzas, but it does not stay there. Even under perfect conditions, it can only cook Neapolitan pizzas in a matter of minutes. Sometimes, however, it may take some time to get the oven ready for the next batch.
We've been enjoying our Ooni Fyra Oven pizza oven for many afternoons and evenings. Then lockdown rules made it possible to have other people in our garden so we enjoyed making pizzas for everyone.
Since receiving our Ooni Fyra pizza oven, we've since spent many an afternoon and evening having garden pizza parties as a family, and when lockdown rules allowed us to welcome other people into our garden too we happily cooked pizzas for everyone with ease.
The Ooni Fyra 12 portable pizzeria oven is lightweight and compact. It is currently the most affordable model in the company's range. You can fuel it with wood pellets which you put in a hopper at your oven's back. There are no flames to ignite, logs or charcoal to arrange, and you should not touch a propane tank.
Ooni Fyra, a great-value pizza oven, delivers high-quality pizzas in under a minute. This compact oven is ideal for both beginners and seasoned pizza chefs. It can also be taken on day trips or holidays because it is lightweight and portable.
With no built-in thermometer, it's a bit of guess work as to when the pizza oven is up to the top temperature and ready for cooking, but I found that in most weather conditions 15 minutes was long enough for it to get up to heat. A good indication of it being ready is to check through the viewing hole and if you can see rolling flames (where the flames reach up and along the roof of the oven), it's ready for cooking.
You have to feel it all, and there is a steep learning curve. My theory? A lot of that is down to the small fireplace mentioned in the preceding section.
The Ooni Fyra pre-packaged pizza oven is lightweight, so it's easy to take out in the garden.
The Fyra delivers on the promise of portability. The chimneys fit into the oven cavity. The legs can be folded up. It weighs less than 20 lbs and is durable and scratch-resistant.
Ooni Fyra is great fun. Many potential buyers will be happy to pay more for the Ooni Fyra.
Ooni Fyra 12 can make 12 inch pizzas when the conditions are right. It also has a fuel hopper where you can add wood pellets to the fire. Ooni provides a thin pizza peel, an all-natural fire starter and wood pellets to operate the oven. These items are not included in the Fyra 12 purchase. They offer all the above plus an infrared thermometer, waterproof carry cover and all of it in one bundle. It is currently the cheapest Ooni oven at $349 and comes with a 3-year warranty.
Ooni has included an inch of opening right beside the handle which is another thing that lacks in their other models. It serves as a peephole, allowing you to keep an eye on pizzas without opening the door, but we could not get a clear view sometimes after cooking a couple of pizzas.
The actual cook time is way faster than a traditional home oven. I used to cook my pizza at 450F for about 15 minutes, but when you're cooking at over 800F, it takes around three minutes. The taste is amazing. 16 June 2020
